Abissa (or Abyssa) was orchestrated by the N'vavilé family of the N'Zima, composed of the Ahantans of Takoradi and the Appolos of Bégnry, themselves made up of the Evawlê, the Djômôlô, the Elêbrê, the Adouvlais, and the Adjoufoulê. It is carried out by rotation and relay between the different Nzema subgroups in Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana.
The Nzema Evawlê of Ghana begin first, followed by the Djômôlô, the Elêbrê, and the Ahantan. When they finish, they throw the torch in Côte d'Ivoire, and it is received by the Adouvlais of the Tiapoum region, then the baton is passed to the Adjoufoulê of Grand-Bassam. This alliance has existed between these peoples for more than two centuries.
